Relapse Response Tool
Understanding Relapse and Utilizing the Relapse Response Tool (RRT)
Decades of experience working with individuals battling addiction have revealed that nearly all relapses are preceded by behaviors that fall into three identifiable categories: Secrets, Isolating Behaviors, and Commitment Breaking/Reprioritization. These categories are collectively referred to by the acronym S.I.C.
If analyzed and processed effectively, relapses can serve as opportunities for growth rather than signaling the end of recovery. When a relapse occurs, it is essential to extract valuable insights from the experience to prevent future setbacks.
The Relapse Response Tool (RRT) helps identify behaviors that may signal an impending relapse. By recognizing these indicators early, individuals can implement "upstream" accountability and support to stay on track. The RRT is also a valuable tool for addressing a “dry relapse”—a state in which a person maintains sobriety but experiences the same emotional and mental patterns typically associated with relapse.
By utilizing the RRT, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of their triggers, develop proactive strategies, and build the accountability needed to strengthen their recovery journey and reduce the risk of future relapses.
